Why convert JFIF to PNG?
A .jfif file is a JPEG image with a different extension, often created when you save a picture from the web on Windows. PNG is lossless, so once the image is a PNG you can edit and re-save it as often as you like without losing more detail. If you only need a file ending in .jpg, use JFIF to JPG, which makes smaller files.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter is a web page that runs in your browser. Your files are read and converted on your own device and are never sent to a server.
Does PNG improve the quality of a JFIF image?
No. Detail removed by the original JPEG compression cannot be brought back. PNG simply stops any further loss when you edit and save the image again.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JFIF?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, while JFIF uses lossy JPEG compression, so photos become several times larger as PNG.
Does the converted file keep the photo’s metadata?
No. The new file is drawn from the decoded pixels, so camera details, date taken and GPS location from the original are not copied into it. Keep the original if you need that information.
